What sand does
Sand settles in the bottom of the tub and gets pumped into the drain pump, where it wears the impeller and blocks the filter. Over time it can also get into the bearings.
Shake towels and swimmers out well before washing, and rinse wetsuits separately.
What salt air does
In laundries near the water, salt air can speed up rust on the cabinet, hinges and screws, and on connections inside the machine. Outdoor laundries get the worst of it.
